According to TPWD, the Gulf’s oxygen levels had plummeted, suffocating the fish. This natural occurrence happens when algae blooms die off, and the decomposition process consumes oxygen from the water. Specific fish species like Gulf menhaden, which are particularly vulnerable to low oxygen levels, are usually the first to be affected.

TPWD is monitoring the situation and advising the public to avoid areas with dead fish. While natural, mass fish kills can have a significant impact on the local ecosystem. The department is working to assess the full extent of the damage and the potential impact on other marine life. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerability of marine environments to changes in water quality and oxygen levels.
