Snap Election: Portugal’s Right Turn

Portugal’s upcoming election is characterized by a deeply reactionary political climate, primarily fueled by anti-migrant sentiment. The dominant narrative is one of xenophobia, overshadowing the substantive issues that directly impact the Portuguese working class.

Notably absent from the campaign discourse are critical discussions about the global implications of capitalism’s trajectory towards world war. The escalating crisis within the European Union, a situation with direct consequences for Portugal’s economic and political stability, is also being ignored.

Furthermore, the devastating effects of trade wars, the ongoing implementation of austerity measures, and the increasing militarization of society are not being addressed by any of the political parties vying for power. The election campaign is therefore failing to confront the pressing challenges faced by the Portuguese working class.
