Game Over: SAG-AFTRA Strike Ends

The article on wsws.org details the controversial end to the actors’ strike in Mexico, organized by the National Association of Actors (ANDA), against TelevisaUnivision. The strike, involving actors demanding fair residuals for the streaming of their work, ended abruptly with a deal reached in secret negotiations and then presented to members as a “take-it-or-leave-it” scenario, with little opportunity for review or discussion.

The agreement itself is criticized for failing to adequately address the core issue of streaming residuals, and for containing ambiguous language that favors TelevisaUnivision. The author contends that the deal weakens the bargaining power of ANDA and sets a dangerous precedent for future negotiations regarding new media residuals in the entertainment industry.

The article highlights the widespread discontent among ANDA members, many of whom felt betrayed by the union leadership. The lack of transparency in the negotiation process and the rushed ratification vote are heavily criticized, and the author suggests that this outcome reflects a broader pattern of union bureaucracies prioritizing their own interests over the needs of their members. It’s argued that this top-down approach stifles democratic participation and undermines the potential for effective collective action.
