Striking Distance: Syria’s Palace Targeted

On Monday, Israel conducted airstrikes near Syria’s Aleppo International Airport, resulting in its temporary closure and damage to the runway. Syrian state media, SANA, attributed the attack to Israel, reporting that the strikes targeted several locations near Aleppo. While the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights claimed the targeted site housed Hezbollah weapons depots, this remains unconfirmed.

This marks the second time Aleppo airport has been targeted this year, with a similar incident occurring in March. These strikes are part of a broader pattern of Israeli military actions within Syria. Israel rarely acknowledges these attacks, but has repeatedly stated it aims to prevent Iranian entrenchment and the transfer of weapons to Hezbollah.

The Syrian government, a close ally of Iran, has condemned these strikes as violations of its sovereignty. The attacks occur amidst ongoing tensions in the region, including concerns about Iran’s growing influence and the potential for escalation between Israel and its adversaries. The strikes raise concerns about the safety of civilian infrastructure, like airports, and the potential disruption of humanitarian aid deliveries. The frequency of such attacks underlines the volatile security situation in Syria.
