Fentanyl Blame Game

China maintains that the fentanyl crisis in the United States is not its responsibility. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin stated that the U.S. cannot simply ask for cooperation while simultaneously sanctioning Chinese companies and individuals. He accused the U.S. of deflecting blame and lacking sincerity in addressing the issue.

Wang emphasized that China has taken measures to prevent the illegal outflow of fentanyl, including scheduling all fentanyl-related substances, a stricter measure than the United Nations control list. He argues that the U.S. needs to reduce domestic demand for fentanyl and strengthen supervision of pharmaceutical companies to solve its drug problem. He also cited the high number of drug users in the U.S. as a contributing factor.

The U.S. has repeatedly urged China to crack down on the production and export of fentanyl precursors, chemicals used to make the drug. Washington argues that these precursors are often shipped to Mexico where drug cartels produce fentanyl and then smuggle it into the U.S. The Biden administration has imposed sanctions on Chinese companies and individuals allegedly involved in the fentanyl trade. China views these sanctions as an obstacle to cooperation and claims they are unjustified. The U.S. counters that China isn’t doing enough to halt the flow of fentanyl-related substances, contributing to the overdose crisis in America.
