In June 2025, Canada Post and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) engaged in tense contract negotiations. The central issue revolved around Canada Post’s demand for significant concessions from postal workers, particularly regarding wages, benefits, and job security.
Canada Post, facing declining mail volumes and increasing competition, argued that it needed to modernize its operations and reduce labor costs to remain financially viable. The CUPW, representing over 50,000 postal workers, countered that Canada Post was prioritizing profits over the well-being of its employees and the quality of postal services.
The negotiations reached a critical juncture when Canada Post issued a “final” offer and called on the Canadian government to intervene and force a vote on the proposal. This move was widely seen as an attempt to bypass the union and put pressure on workers to accept the company’s terms.
In a surprising move, the CUPW responded by proposing to surrender workers’ rights to strike and to determine, through collective bargaining, their terms of employment.
