City Under Siege?

According to a *Washington Post* article, the Trump administration was secretly planning a rapid deployment force composed of active-duty troops to be deployed to cities experiencing protests or unrest. This report surfaced one day after Trump announced the federal takeover of the Washington D.C. police and the deployment of 800 National Guard troops to the capital.

The contingency plan, reportedly reviewed by senior military officials, involved units from across the armed forces being placed on alert, ready for deployment within hours. The purpose was to provide a quick and forceful response to quell potential civil disturbances.

These plans triggered significant concern within the Pentagon, with some officials fearing the politicization of the military and its use against American citizens. It also raised questions about the legal basis for such a deployment, given the Posse Comitatus Act, which restricts the use of the military for domestic law enforcement. The revelations intensified existing anxieties about the Trump administration’s willingness to use federal power, including military force, to suppress dissent.
