Toyota has announced a breakthrough in solid-state battery technology, aiming for a significant reduction in battery size, weight, and cost, while simultaneously increasing driving range and reducing charging times for electric vehicles (EVs). They aim to commercialize these batteries in 2027 or 2028.

The company is exploring different types of solid electrolytes, including sulfides, and envisions a future where solid-state batteries offer a range of 745 miles (1,200 km) and a charging time of just 10 minutes. This technology is expected to be a “game changer” for the EV industry, addressing key consumer concerns such as range anxiety and long charging times.

Toyota’s advancements in solid-state batteries are part of a broader push to improve battery technology. They have simplified the production process, paving the way for mass production. This move directly addresses the current limitations of lithium-ion batteries, offering the potential for lighter, more energy-dense, and safer alternatives. While initially focusing on high-performance EVs, the technology could eventually become more affordable and available in a wider range of vehicles. This announcement signifies Toyota’s commitment to leading the charge in EV innovation and could reshape the competitive landscape.
