Greek public sector workers staged a one-day strike on Thursday to demonstrate against a recently enacted law perceived as detrimental to their working conditions. The law, passed by the right-wing New Democracy government, permits employers to extend daily working hours to a maximum of 13, a significant increase that sparked widespread concern among employees.
The strike was largely successful, significantly impacting public services across the country, including schools, hospitals, and municipal offices. Union leaders characterized the law as an attack on workers’ rights, arguing that extended hours would lead to burnout, reduced productivity, and a decline in the quality of public services.
Beyond the extended working hours, the legislation also introduces stricter disciplinary measures for public sector employees. These measures are seen by many as a means to suppress dissent and control the workforce more tightly. Unions argue that the new disciplinary framework lacks transparency and due process, potentially leading to unfair treatment and unjust penalties. The workers are demanding the law be repealed.
