Osteen’s Gospel Firestorm

Country singer Shane Smith publicly criticized Joel Osteen, pastor of Lakewood Church, during a recent concert. Smith, frontman of the band Shane Smith & The Saints, interrupted his set to express his disapproval of Osteen’s wealth and perceived lack of action during Hurricane Harvey.

Smith stated that he doesn’t understand how someone like Osteen can accumulate so much wealth while others struggle, questioning the pastor’s priorities. He referenced Osteen’s initial reluctance to open Lakewood Church as a shelter for displaced residents during the devastating hurricane in 2017. Smith suggested Osteen was too concerned with protecting the church’s assets rather than helping those in need.

The band was performing at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, near Osteen’s Lakewood Church. Smith’s comments were captured on video and quickly spread on social media, sparking discussion and debate about wealth, religion, and social responsibility. He didn’t apologize for his remarks, and many applauded his candor.
