A recent study published in *Environmental Science & Technology* has revealed a correlation between commonly used PFAS “forever chemicals” and an increased risk of ulcerative colitis (UC). Researchers from the University of Southern California examined blood samples from over 1,000 individuals, approximately half of whom had UC, over a 20-year period. The study focused on four prevalent PFAS chemicals: PFOS, PFOA, PFHxS, and PFNA.
The findings indicated that individuals with higher levels of PFOS and PFHxS in their blood were more likely to develop UC. Specifically, participants in the highest quartile of PFOS exposure had a five times higher risk of developing UC compared to those in the lowest quartile. Similarly, those in the highest quartile of PFHxS exposure were approximately three times more likely to develop the disease. PFOA also showed a weaker but still notable association with increased UC risk, while PFNA did not demonstrate a significant link.
Ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease affecting the colon and rectum, causing inflammation and ulcers. The study’s authors suggest that PFAS chemicals might disrupt the gut’s immune system or microbiome, potentially contributing to the development of UC. They emphasize the need for further research to understand the specific mechanisms behind this association and to investigate the potential impact of other PFAS chemicals on gut health.
