Wounded Knee Medals: Honor Intact

Fox News host Pete Hegseth defended the U.S. Army soldiers involved in the Wounded Knee Massacre, arguing they should be remembered for their broader service to the nation and that the medals of honor they received shouldn’t be revoked. Hegseth’s comments came in response to ongoing calls for the rescindment of these medals due to the brutality and injustice of the event.

The Wounded Knee Massacre, which occurred in 1890, involved the killing of hundreds of Lakota men, women, and children by the U.S. Army. Many view the massacre as a horrific act of violence against an already subjugated population.

Hegseth acknowledged the tragedy of Wounded Knee, stating that he’s not denying what happened there. However, he emphasized that the soldiers also served the country in other conflicts and contributed to the expansion and preservation of the United States. He asserted that judging historical figures by modern standards is problematic and risks undermining the legacy of the nation’s founders and military heroes. He emphasized the importance of remembering soldiers for their overall service and patriotism, even if they participated in controversial events. The debate around the medals of honor awarded to those involved continues to stir controversy and spark discussions about historical accountability and the legacy of American expansion.
