Cold Case Closed: Yogurt Shop Murders

After over 30 years, authorities in Texas believe they’ve solved the Yogurt Shop Murders, the brutal 1991 killings of four teenage girls in Austin. The victims – Eliza Thomas, Jennifer Harbison, Sarah Harbison, and Amy Ayers – were found bound, gagged, and shot in the back of an I Can’t Believe It’s Yogurt! shop.

The case has been plagued by false confessions and dead ends. In 1999, two men, Robert Springsteen and Michael Scott, confessed, but later recanted. Springsteen was convicted, while Scott’s conviction was overturned. DNA evidence initially pointed to multiple suspects, but later analysis suggested only one male profile.

Investigators now assert that Maurice Pierce, who died in 2020, is the sole perpetrator. Advancements in DNA technology allowed the Texas Department of Public Safety crime lab to identify Pierce as the source of the DNA found at the scene. Authorities say Pierce’s DNA was on the body of one of the victims and that he had ties to the area and the victims. While Pierce cannot be brought to justice due to his death, officials hope this identification provides closure to the families and community affected by the tragedy. The case is now officially closed.
