Atlantic Surge

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) is closely monitoring a tropical disturbance in the Gulf of Mexico, increasing the odds of its development into a tropical depression or storm. The disturbance, currently located near the Yucatan Peninsula, is expected to move westward and then northwestward over the Gulf of Mexico.

Conditions in the Gulf are favorable for development, including warm waters and low wind shear. These factors could allow the system to strengthen significantly over the next few days. The NHC has increased the probability of formation to 70% over the next 48 hours and 80% over the next seven days.

Regardless of whether it becomes a named storm, the system is forecast to bring heavy rainfall and potential flooding to portions of the Gulf Coast, particularly Texas and Louisiana. Residents in these areas are urged to monitor the progress of the system and prepare for potential impacts.

The next name on the list for the Atlantic hurricane season is Alberto. The NHC will continue to provide updates on the system’s development and track as it moves across the Gulf of Mexico.
