Denying Disability: Trump’s Social Security Plan

The *Washington Post* reported that the Trump administration is enacting changes to two Social Security disability programs that will make it harder for eligible individuals to receive benefits. These programs, Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI), provide crucial financial support to older, disabled workers and low-income individuals.

The changes impact the “Ticket to Work” program, designed to encourage beneficiaries to return to work. Previously, participation in the program allowed individuals to maintain their disability status while attempting to re-enter the workforce. Under the new rules, the Social Security Administration (SSA) can conduct continuing disability reviews (CDRs) even for those actively participating in Ticket to Work, potentially terminating their benefits if they are deemed capable of working, regardless of their actual employment status.

The second change increases the frequency of CDRs for SSI recipients with medical conditions expected to improve. This means more frequent evaluations of their health and ability to work, increasing the risk of benefit termination based on projections rather than current reality.

Critics argue these changes are designed to cut costs by reducing the number of beneficiaries, placing a further burden on vulnerable populations. These reforms were implemented without congressional approval, through administrative procedures.
