Latin America Strike Wave

A wave of teachers’ strikes is sweeping across Latin America, from Mexico to Panama, Colombia, Argentina, and Brazil. These strikes represent a growing resistance to widespread attacks on public education and broader social rights being implemented throughout the region.

In Mexico, the CNTE teachers union has been engaged in rolling strikes and protests, demanding increased wages, improved working conditions, and the repeal of detrimental education reforms. Similarly, in Panama, teachers have been striking against budget cuts and policies threatening the quality of public education.

Colombian teachers are also protesting austerity measures affecting education, along with broader issues of social inequality and violence. Argentina has witnessed teacher strikes related to low salaries and inadequate funding for schools, exacerbated by the country’s economic crisis.

Brazilian educators have taken action against privatization efforts, budget reductions, and policies perceived as undermining the public education system. These strikes are not isolated incidents, but interconnected expressions of discontent with neoliberal policies impacting education and living standards across Latin America. They demonstrate a common struggle against the erosion of social gains and the worsening conditions facing educators and students in the region.
