Zambia’s Tainted Copper

A Chinese-owned mining company, Zijin Mining Group, is facing accusations of environmental cover-ups in Serbia. The company’s operations at the Čukaru Peki copper and gold mine, a significant project for both Serbia and China, are under scrutiny for allegedly polluting the local environment and concealing the extent of the damage.

The allegations include dumping untreated wastewater into the Pek River, a tributary of the Danube, and illegally building a tailings dam. These actions reportedly caused significant fish kills and contaminated water sources used by local residents and farmers. While Zijin Mining has claimed compliance with environmental regulations, investigations and reports from independent researchers and local activists paint a different picture.

Critics argue that the Serbian government, eager to attract foreign investment, has been lax in enforcing environmental standards and holding Zijin Mining accountable. They accuse the government of prioritizing economic benefits over environmental protection and the well-being of its citizens. This situation highlights the potential environmental risks associated with foreign investments, particularly in countries with weaker regulatory frameworks. The case has sparked protests and growing concerns about the long-term environmental consequences of mining activities in the region and the transparency and accountability of companies operating under foreign ownership.
